“Conversion therapy” is a practice that aims to change one’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Per UCLA’s Williams Institute, an estimated 700,000 people have undergone these change efforts, as of 2018. The practice has been widely discredited given its proven ineffectiveness and harm, with research showing that LGBTQ+ people who experience this therapy have significantly higher odds of lifetime suicidal ideation.
On October 7, 2025, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a landmark case that is challenging Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy with minors. Join us for a timely conversation with two individuals at the center of this historic moment. While representing differing faith convictions, they are unified in their advocacy for LGBTQ+ youth and an accurate representation of conversion therapy.
Dr. Julia Sadusky is an author, speaker, and psychologist based in Colorado, the state at the center of the Supreme Court case. Her “amicus brief” in support of the state ban on conversion therapy was reviewed by the court in advance of the oral arguments, and she was engaged in media interviews and press conferences in Washington D.C. at the time of the hearings.
In her vocation, Julia consults and trains counseling centers and faith-based institutions on sexuality, gender identity, mental health, and trauma-informed care. She has authored two books and coauthored two others, including Emerging Gender Identities: Understanding the Diverse Experiences of Today’s Youth (Brazos Press) and Gender Identity & Faith: Clinical Postures, Tools and Case Studies for Client-Centered Care (Intervarsity Press). Linda Robertson is a long-time advocate of LGBTQ+ families, based on her tragic personal story. As with Julia, her “amicus brief” was part of the Supreme Court review, and she was active in numerous interviews surrounding the case, with a recent Instagram post of her story going immediately viral.
When her 12-year old son Ryan came out, she responded as she thought any good Christian parent should – that she loved him, but God and they would not support him being gay. The next six years would see Ryan striving to not be gay, including years of conversion therapy. Seeing no change, Ryan disappeared for two years, falling into despair and drug addiction. During that time, Linda had a complete change in perspective, which led to a healing reunion with her son. Yet sadly, after multiple suicide attempts, Ryan died of a drug overdose in 2009 at age 20.
This unthinkable tragedy became a catalyst, as Linda has dedicated her life to advocacy and coaching countless Christian parents of LGBTQ+ children on what their kids need most – unconditional love. You can learn more of Linda’s story at justbecausehebreathes.com
