MTR Connect | David Gushee & Emily P. Freeman

December 10 @ 7:30 pm - 8:45 pm
Popular media can display Christianity in its worst light, while many behind the scenes are quietly reflecting the ways of Jesus. Today, religious and political forces unite. Yet don’t let the headlines fool you. That’s not Jesus.
Join us as we examine and reclaim the Christian response to our LGBTQ+ neighbors.

In this episode, we’ll explore thoughtfully re-examining our beliefs, and the catalysts that compel us.

Dr. David Gushee

David is widely regarded as one of his generation’s most significant Christian moral thinkers. He is the Distinguished Professor of Christian Ethics at Mercer University, and the past-president of the American Academy of Religion. He has authored or contributed to more than 30 books, including Kingdom Ethics, Changing Our Mind, and most recently, The Moral Teachings of Jesus.

His 2014 bestseller Changing Our Minds lost him most of his conservative audience, where he shared his personal and theological journey toward LGBTQ+ inclusion. Since, David has grown into a leading voice on the matter, lecturing and consulting globally in both academic and church settings. He’s been featured by CNN, USA Today, Religion News Service, and other major outlets. Brian’s podcast interview with David is among his most popular with over 3,800 downloads. He and his wife, Jeanie, split time living in Atlanta and England, and have three adult children and three grandkids.

Emily P. Freeman

Emily and Brian met thanks to his podcast episode with Dr. Gushee, which proved an impactful part of her personal journey — which you’ll hear about on this episode.

She is the New York Times bestselling author of six books, including How to Walk into a Room: The Art of Knowing When to Stay and When to Walk Away. She holds a masters degree in Christian Spiritual Formation and Leadership, and considers her most important work is to “help create space for your soul to breathe, so that you can discern your next right thing”. Her nationally ranked podcast, The Next Right Thing, has more than 28 million downloads, and her weekly newsletter The Soul Minimalist has an avid following. She lives in North Carolina with her husband John, who together have three children.
