Reconciling Love

I had the privilege of knowing this article was coming. The co-author Bill is a close friend and colleague. And while I’ve heard Bill’s story before, this article provided quite a new angle – it was written by his son Timothy.

Timothy shares his vantage point on his Dad’s long and winding road: from learning Timothy was gay, to wrestling with God and the Bible, to as a pastor navigating new convictions and departing congregants, to finding the other side of all this, and thriving.

All was informed not just by their close relationship, but also by Dad’s journal entries that he provided Timothy – an awkward offering, as Bill freely admits, for his often messy journey to be on display.

The article was one of the most widely read articles in the NY Times this year. Here’s a couple of the 400+ comments when the article printed:

“This is the most hopeful, gorgeous, Christian thing I have ever read. Thank you for providing a reason not to disavow the faith I learned as a child.”

“This is a powerful reminder that parenting isn’t about perfection, but about showing up with unwavering love, openness, and the willingness to grow alongside our children.”

You can access the article via this link in or at smallchurchbigtable.com, where you can learn about the good work Bill is up to with church leaders and parents.

Then, share this with someone who needs some hope and a picture of the better way.
